Presented for the first time at miart 2019, this extraordinary canvas with impressive dimensions is considered one of the masterpieces of Iaroslav Serpan.
A rare piece of art for its monumentality, it is characterized by black pictorial traits, a distinctive element in paintings of the same period. Fluidly distributed over the entire surface of the canvas, these sign “ensembles” represent the structure syntax of Serpan’s language and highlight his gestural approach to artistic creation.
The work of art belonged to the private collection of the architect Luigi Moretti, a prime character in the diffusion of art autre in Italy. Moretti and Tapié had come into contact in 1951 on the occasion of the Véhémences confrontées exhibition, organized by the French critic at the Galerie Nina Dausset in Paris. From this meeting a partnership begins that will lead Moretti to the opening of the Spazio gallery in Rome in 1954 and subsequently (in 1960), to participate in the exciting experience of the International Center of Aesthetic Research in Turin. It is in the Spazio gallery that Tapié organizes a solo show by Serpan in 1955. From an archive search, a photograph of the time portraying Serpan and Tapié in front of this painting emerged. The history, the renowned provenance, combined with the lyrical power of the painting, is not only the evidence of Serpan’s creative genius but are representative of the extraordinary cultural ferment stemming from Michel Tapié.
